Making Waves Academy in Richmond, California represents a transformative educational construction project that expanded a charter school serving low-income students from a modest 4-acre campus to a state-of-the-art 20-acre facility. The project consisted of new construction of a 135,000 square foot middle school in three phases, featuring two 2-story classroom buildings, gymnasium with new athletic fields, amphitheater and site improvements over 10.4 acres.
Vance Brown Builders served as the general contractor for Phases II and III of this multi-phased expansion, bringing their expertise to the complex educational construction project.
The design utilized economical tilt-up concrete construction, articulated by sunshades and bright colors, along with colorful, panel-clad pop-outs, creating flexible, open learning spaces that allowed the school to shift to a more collaborative educational model. The project also included the transformation of the school's existing three buildings into state-of-the-art facilities, with program features including a parent resource center, restorative justice spaces, Maker Spaces, and a performance art space.
