The Munger Graduate Residences at Stanford University is a five-building, 500,000 square foot dormitory and mixed-use complex designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among graduate students from law, business, medicine, engineering, and other fields. The project utilized advanced construction techniques and was built by Vance Brown Builders, featuring housing for 600 students along with amenities including a large commercial kitchen serving a 370-person dining hall, informal café, convenience store, conference rooms, and office space.
The design was heavily influenced by benefactor Charlie Munger's detailed architectural vision, which he communicated through an eight-page fax with freehand drawings and specifications, resulting in buildings that bore "a striking resemblance to his original sketches." Upon completion, the residence received high praise from students, with remarks like "the most beautiful student housing I've ever seen."
